Mashups and widgets

These things aren’t really user generated content (UGC), but they’re part of the whole Web 2.0 thing and certainly in many circumstances can be a vehicle for UGC.

Probably best if I direct you straight to the Wikipedia entry for both Mashups and Widgets. Good sites exist for seeing what’s out there so far in the travel sector for both:

Designate’s done some work in this area too. Specifically with Wales in Style (WiS) and www.holiday.co.uk.

  • Wales in Style integrates event feed information into a Google map and co-locates information about accommodation and places to eat. Here’s an example.
  • Holiday.co.uk actually pulls in photos from Flickr which are returned based on the search query for the holiday (e.g Egypt, Luxor) while the Website goes and queries the bed banks and flight databases. NB - the example linked to in this post is our development test, so it’ll just keep searching, so you’ll have to shut down your browser window or navigate away.
